Many Arizona homes are built on concrete slabs, and some have water lines running beneath them. A slab leak can waste water for weeks or months before it shows up. Here are the signs worth taking seriously.
Common signs
- A water bill that rises without a change in how you use water
- A warm or hot spot on the floor, which can indicate a leak in a hot water line
- The sound of running or hissing water when everything is off
- Damp carpet, baseboards or cracked tile
- A musty odor or visible mold
- Low water pressure
A simple meter check
Turn off all water-using fixtures and appliances, including the ice maker and irrigation. Look at your water meter’s leak indicator or dial. If it is still moving, water is going somewhere. Then close the main shutoff valve to the house. If the meter stops, the leak is likely inside the house. If it keeps moving, the leak may be on the water service line between the meter and the house.
What to do next
- If water is damaging the home, shut off the main valve and call a provider right away.
- Take photos and keep your recent water bills.
- Ask a provider about leak detection methods such as acoustic listening, thermal imaging or pressure testing.
- Ask about repair options: spot repair, rerouting or repiping.
- Check your homeowner’s policy and consider contacting your insurer early.
If you are away part of the year
For seasonal households, shutting off the main water when you leave limits what a hidden leak can do. Ask someone to check on the house periodically.

Questions
What does a slab leak sound like?
Often a faint hiss or the sound of running water when nothing is on. It is easiest to hear in a quiet house.
How can I tell if my leak is under the slab?
A moving meter with all fixtures off, warm floor spots and damp flooring are clues. A provider can confirm with leak detection equipment.
Will a slab leak fix itself?
No. Leaks tend to get worse, and the surrounding soil and structure can suffer.
