Gas vs. Electric Water Heaters: Which Fits Your Home?
Installation, safety, recovery and repairs compared.
By Elite Water Heater Repair Services · Published October 8, 2026
For many homes the fuel is already decided by what is connected. If you do have a choice, or are considering a conversion, these are the main differences.
Gas (natural gas or propane)
- Generally heats water faster and recovers quickly
- Needs a gas line, proper venting and combustion air
- Safety matters: a gas smell is a reason to leave and call 911 or your gas utility
- Common repairs involve pilots, igniters, thermocouples and gas valves
Electric
- Needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and no venting for standard tank models
- Often found in manufactured homes and homes without gas service
- Recovery is typically slower than gas
- Common repairs involve elements and thermostats
Converting between the two
Conversion usually means new electrical or gas and venting work, and sometimes permits. Ask for itemized quotes. See water heater installation for what to plan.
